Extreme Weather Events and Insurance: Infrastructure, Utilities, and Who Pays (Virtual)

National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

When

12:30 – 2 p.m., Dec. 1, 2025

Where

Financial losses due to extreme weather are rising, creating serious challenges for the U.S. insurance and recovery system. Infrastructure operators, utilities, insurers, and communities all play a role in managing climate-related risks, but competing interests, long-term uncertainty, and financial constraints complicate preparedness and response.

The second event in the National Academies webinar series will focus on utilities. Speakers will explore how utilities, insurers, and communities approach risk management, financing, and adaptation. The session will also examine how shared and conflicting narratives about extreme weather events and resilience influence how interested parties make decisions around these issues.
