Internship Opportunities at the Southwest Center for Resilience in Climate Change and Health (SCORCH)

Overview: The Southwest Center for Resilience in Climate Change and Health (SCORCH) is a collaborative hub dedicated to addressing the pressing health challenges faced by communities in Arid Lands as they adapt to climate change. SCORCH fosters transdisciplinary research initiatives aimed at improving health equity across diverse populations, with a particular focus on Indigenous, Latinx, low resource urban, and rural communities in the southwestern United States and beyond.

Mission: Our overarching mission is to enhance existing community partnerships and support adaptation efforts by facilitating solutions-oriented team-science projects. These projects will address the health needs of communities affected by climate change, promoting resilience and fostering sustainable health outcomes across the lifespan.

Research Focus Groups: SCORCH conducts research across several key areas:

  • Health Effects of Extreme Weather Events
  • Forecasting and Early Warning Systems
  • Adaptive Responses to the Built Environment

Internship Opportunities: SCORCH is offering a range of internship opportunities for motivated graduate and undergraduate (sophomore and junior) University of Arizona students. These internships provide hands-on experience in critical areas of climate change and health research, contributing to SCORCH's mission while offering valuable professional development opportunities.

  • Duration: 10 weeks
  • Hours: 20 hours per week (Hybrid)
  • Compensation: Graduate students $28/hour, Undergraduate $18/hour

 

Available Internships:

  1. Climate Initiatives Database Internship: Assist in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive database of climate initiatives and programs relevant to SCORCH's research areas.
  2. Literature Review Internship: Conduct literature reviews on topics related to climate change, health effects, and adaptation strategies, supporting SCORCH's research initiatives. Participate in the development of manuscripts on the topic.
  3. Communication and Education Internship: Support SCORCH's communication efforts through content creation, social media management, and educational outreach activities.
  4. Library Data Assessment Internship: Assist in the evaluation and analysis of library data, contributing to the organization and accessibility of resources relevant to SCORCH's research focus.
  5. Video / Media: Develop video vignettes of research (Translation), video interviews with Community Advisory Board members
  6. Community Response to Heat: Assist in efforts aimed at understanding how communities and healthcare systems are responding to extreme heat and evaluating the utilization of heat response resources.
