La Isla Network & Bayer – COP30
When
Extreme heat is rapidly becoming one of the most lethal climate-related threats to human health. 2.4 billion workers are exposed to dangerous heat conditions, with a wide range of health implications from heatstroke, kidney disease and increased risk of mortality to financial consequences such as reduced labour productivity, all of which contribute to the deepening of poverty with increased costs for companies and countries. The impacts are disproportionately felt by vulnerable populations—especially outdoor workers, the elderly, people living with chronic conditions and those living in low and middle-income countries.
As global temperatures rise, the frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves are escalating, with nearly half the world’s population experiencing adverse health effects from high temperatures. Yet, policy responses and public health systems remain underprepared unless there is a dramatic scale-up of heat-health warning systems, enforced workplace protections and climate adaptation of occupational health programs. This side event will spotlight the urgent need for cross-sector collaboration to mitigate the health impacts of extreme heat, drawing on scientific research, corporate innovation, and frontline advocacy.
